AIO
AIO has two meanings in AI search: short for Google's AI Overviews, and short for AI optimization, the work of getting named in AI answers.
AIO is an abbreviation with two meanings, and you'll see both in AI search:
- AI Overviews, the AI-written summaries Google shows at the top of some search results
- AI optimization, another name for the work of getting your brand named and cited in AI answers, also called GEO or AEO
Which one someone means usually depends on who's talking. SEO people tracking Google often use AIO for AI Overviews. Agencies selling services sometimes use it for the whole practice.
Why the mix-up matters
The two meanings cover very different ground. AI Overviews is one feature on one platform. AI optimization covers every assistant people use: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google and more.
For example, an agency report might say "AIO visibility up 12%." If it means AI Overviews, that's how often Fernhill Coffee appears in Google's summaries. If it means AI optimization, it might be an average across six platforms. Same three letters, two different numbers, and you can't compare them.
So if you see AIO in a proposal or a report, ask which one is meant. When you write it yourself, spell it out the first time.
AI Overviews in AnswerOrbit
We don't use the abbreviation. We call the platform Google AI Overviews, and it's one of the six we ask every day. When Google shows no overview for a prompt, the answer reads No AI answer, and the AI answer rate tells you how often each prompt gets one. See Answers.
