Brave Leo is the AI assistant built into the Brave web browser. You can ask it questions, have it summarize the page you're on, or chat about anything else, without leaving the browser.
What makes it worth knowing about is where it looks things up. Leo can add results from Brave Search to its answers, and Brave Search runs its own index of the web. Many AI assistants rely on another company's search engine. Leo relies on Brave's.
Why its own index matters
An AI assistant that searches the web can only cite pages its search engine has found and ranks well. Different indexes find different pages and order them differently.
So a page that ranks well on Google or Bing isn't guaranteed to rank on Brave Search, and the other way round. A brand that's named often in one assistant's answers can be named less in Leo's, simply because Leo is reading from a different set of results.
For example, Kestrel Roasters' brewing guide ranks on the first page of Google when people search for how to brew pour-over. On Brave Search it's on the third page. When someone asks Leo how to brew pour-over, Kestrel's guide is much less likely to be among the pages it reads.
What you can do
Check how you rank on Brave Search for the questions your customers ask, the same way you'd check Google. Make sure your robots.txt doesn't block Brave's crawler. And keep your pages clear and readable without scripts, so any index can read them.
Brave describes how Leo uses its search results in its announcement, and answers that use search results link to a Brave Search page so you can see the sources.
