Third-party signals
Third-party signals are what independent sites say about your brand, such as reviews, press, forums and directories, which AI answers lean on.
Third-party signals are what other people's websites say about you: reviews, news stories, list articles, directories, forum threads, analyst reports. Your own site is one voice. These are everybody else's.
AI platforms lean on them heavily when they decide which brands to name and how to describe them. So what's said about you elsewhere can shape an answer as much as anything on your own pages.
Why the platforms lean on them
Every brand says it's good. A platform trying to give a fair answer looks for what independent sources say, and how many of them say it. If five review sites and a trade magazine all describe Fernhill Coffee as a good choice for espresso, that carries more weight than Fernhill's own homepage saying so.
They also fill in what you don't say. If your site doesn't mention delivery times, the platform will use whatever a review or a forum thread says about them.
The kinds that matter
- Review sites and marketplaces, where customers rate you
- Press and trade publications
- List articles and comparisons, like "the best coffee subscriptions"
- Directories and reference sites
- Forums and social sites, where people ask each other for advice
Which ones matter most depends on your industry and your customers' questions. The quickest way to find out is to look at which sites the answers to your prompts actually use.
An example
For example, Kestrel Roasters looks at the sources behind its answers. The platforms keep using two review sites, a coffee magazine and one forum. Kestrel is on both review sites, with a decent rating. The magazine has never written about it. That's where its outreach starts.
In AnswerOrbit
Sources sorts every page the answers used by who owns it: you, your competitors, or someone else, grouped by type. The Gaps tab lists sources whose answers name a competitor and not you. In Perception, the Review sites tab puts your reviews next to what the answers say.
