AI response

An AI response is the answer an AI platform writes to a question, including the brands it names and the pages it links to.

An AI response is the answer an AI platform writes when someone asks it a question. It's the text you read in ChatGPT, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview, along with any links, product cards or sources shown with it.

For a brand, the response is where everything happens. It's where you're named or left out, described well or badly, and recommended first or last.

What's in a response

A typical response has a few parts:

  • The written answer, which may name several brands, often in a list
  • Links to the pages the platform used, shown inline or as a list of sources
  • Sometimes product cards with prices, on platforms that show shopping results
  • Sometimes ads, on platforms that show them

What you don't see are the searches the platform ran before writing it, unless it shows them.

Why responses vary

Ask the same question twice and you can get two different responses. The platform may search differently, read different pages, or simply word things another way. The model it uses can change too.

For example, on Monday a response to "best budget laptop for students" might name four brands with yours third. On Tuesday the same question might name five, with yours missing. That's why one response tells you little, and a week of them tells you much more.
