Answer Engine market share
Answer engine market share is how AI search use splits between platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features.
Answer engine market share is how the use of AI search splits between the platforms: how much happens on ChatGPT, how much on Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the rest.
It helps you decide where to spend your effort. If most of your customers ask ChatGPT, that's where you most need to be named.
Read the figures carefully
You'll see plenty of market share figures, and they often disagree. That's usually because they measure different things:
- Visits to each platform's website, which misses apps and assistants built into other products
- Share of all searches, including ordinary Google searches, which makes every AI platform look small
- Share of AI chats only, which leaves out Google's AI Overviews entirely
- One country or one device, quietly presented as the whole market
So before you quote a number, check what it counts, where, and over what period. Two honest studies can give very different answers.
Your market isn't the market
The overall split matters less than where your own customers ask. A software company selling to developers might find most of its buyers on one assistant. A local bakery's customers might mostly see Google's AI Overviews, without ever opening a chat app.
For example, Harrow & Pine might read that one platform has most of the market and focus there. But if its answers on Google AI Mode name it half as often as on that platform, and its customers search Google first, AI Mode could be the bigger gap.

Every plan includes all six platforms, so you can see how you do on each one before deciding where to focus. Filter your numbers by platform, or open a topic's By platform tab, described in Topics and prompts. The Demand tab estimates how many conversations a month use a word or phrase across the six platforms, from a panel of conversations and searches.
