Auto-generated content is text produced by a program rather than written page by page, from simple templates to AI writing tools.
Automatically generated content is text a program produces, not a person writing each page. It covers a lot of ground: product pages filled in from a database, weather pages built from a feed, pages stitched together from other sites, and articles written by AI tools.
The method isn't the problem. Search engines judge what the pages are for and whether they help anyone. For marketers that's good news and a warning at once: automation can save time, and it can also produce thousands of pages nobody needs.
What Google says
Google's guidance on AI-generated content says it rewards helpful content however it's produced, and that using automation mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies. Its spam policies call that scaled content abuse, and they apply whether the pages come from people, templates or AI.
So a store that builds 2,000 product pages from its catalogue, each with real specs, prices and stock, is fine. A site that produces 2,000 articles on every possible coffee question, each a vague rewrite of the top results, is the kind of thing the policy targets.
Automatically generated vs computer-generated content
The two terms overlap and are often used as one. Automatically generated content usually means pages made by templates or scripts at scale. Computer-generated content is the broader idea of software doing the writing, which today mostly means AI writing tools.
Automatically generated pages and AI answers
AI platforms look for pages that tell them something they can use. Generated pages often repeat what's already ranking, so they add nothing a platform would quote. Template pages built on real data can do well, though, because they hold the specific facts answers need, like a price or a size.
For example, Harrow & Pine's product pages are generated from its catalogue and list each table's dimensions, wood and price. When someone asks an assistant for an oak table under two metres long, those facts are exactly what the answer needs.
