Chunkability

Chunkability is how easily an AI system can lift a clear, complete answer out of a section of your page.

Chunkability is how easily an AI system can take one section of your page and use it as a complete answer. A page that does well here is made of sections that each answer one question, in words that make sense without the rest of the page.

It's a property of your page, and it decides how much of your content is usable when a platform builds an answer. A page full of good information can still score badly if the information is spread across paragraphs that depend on each other.

What helps

Four things help most:

  • Headings that say what the section answers
  • The answer at the start of each section
  • One subject per section
  • Sentences that name what they're about, instead of relying on the previous paragraph

For example, compare two versions of a delivery section on Kestrel Roasters' site.

The first is headed "Good to know" and starts: "As mentioned above, we're happy to help with this too. It usually takes two days." A system lifting this section can't tell what takes two days.

The second is headed "How long does delivery take?" and starts: "Kestrel Roasters delivers across the UK in two working days." That section works on its own, wherever it ends up.

Our page checks look at several of these things, including a title and headings, the prompt in a heading, and an opening that answers. Each check says whether your page passes, and compares it with the pages the platforms cite for the same prompt.
