Generative prompt

A generative prompt asks an AI platform to make something, like an email, a plan or a menu, instead of finding information or recommending a brand.

A generative prompt asks an AI platform to make something: write an email, draft a plan, plan a menu, rewrite a paragraph. It's a different kind of request from asking for information ("how long does espresso stay fresh?") or for a recommendation ("which espresso machine should I buy?").

People ask AI assistants to make things all the time, and brands can turn up in what the platform makes.

Where brands come in

A generative prompt often isn't about a brand at all. "Write a birthday message for my sister" won't name anyone. But many are close to a buying decision without looking like one.

For example, "Plan a weekly shopping list for a small café that serves 80 coffees a day" is a generative prompt. The answer might list beans, milk, cups and a grinder service, and it might name Fernhill Coffee or Kestrel Roasters as suppliers along the way.

Should you track them?

Mostly, no. The questions worth tracking are the ones your customers ask when they're learning about your category, comparing options or ready to buy. Those are where brands get named on purpose.

Add a few generative prompts only when your customers really do ask the platforms to make things that would include a brand like yours, such as a shopping list, a set-up guide or a gift list. Write them the way a customer would.
