LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization)
LLMO, or large language model optimization, is work to get your brand named and described correctly in the answers AI models write.
LLMO, short for large language model optimization, is the work of getting your brand named, and described correctly, in the answers that AI models write. It's one of several names for the same job. You'll also see GEO, AEO and AI SEO.
The name puts the stress on the model itself: what it learned about you in training, as well as what it finds when it searches.
One job, many names
GEO stands for generative engine optimization, and AEO for answer engine optimization. LLMO names the technology underneath. They all mean making sure the AI platforms find you, understand you and recommend you. The tactics are the same whatever you call it.
What the work looks like
Much of it will be familiar from SEO and PR, aimed at a new reader:
- Let the AI bots read your site, and put your text in the HTML they see
- Write pages that answer the questions your customers ask, plainly and early
- Get named on the review sites, lists and forums the platforms read
- Correct wrong facts about you, on your site and on other people's
- Track which questions you're named for, and on which platforms
For example, Fernhill Coffee finds that answers to "best coffee for cold brew" name three competitors and not them. They check which pages those answers used, find two review roundups they're missing from, and write a cold brew guide with their own test results. A few weeks later, they check again.
Where training fits in
Some people use LLMO to mean influencing what models learn in training, over the long term. That's slow, and nobody can see inside the training data. The part you can measure and change this month is what the platforms read when they search.
In AnswerOrbit
AnswerOrbit tracks the last part: which brands the platforms name for your prompts, what they say about you, and which pages they read. Recommendations then tells you what to change next, with the answers and pages behind each suggestion.
