Notability

Notability is Wikipedia's test for whether a subject gets its own article: has it had significant coverage in independent, reliable sources?

Notability is Wikipedia's test for whether a subject deserves its own article. Under its notability guideline, a company, product or person qualifies when independent, reliable sources have written about it in some depth. How big or successful you are doesn't decide it. Coverage does.

It matters to marketers because Wikipedia is one of the reference sites AI platforms lean on to work out who a brand is. Brands with a solid article tend to be described more consistently, and brands without one are described from whatever else the platform can find.

What counts

Wikipedia looks for coverage that's significant, from sources that are reliable and independent of you. A feature in a national newspaper or a trade magazine counts. Your press releases, your own website, paid placements and brief listings don't. Wikipedia has a separate guideline for companies that's stricter still.

For example, say Harrow & Pine has been reviewed at length by two national papers and profiled by a design magazine. That's a good case for notability. Kestrel Roasters, with a busy blog and a few directory listings, probably isn't notable yet, however well it sells.

You can't write your way in

Wikipedia discourages people from writing about their own company, and it requires paid editors to say who pays them. Articles written as marketing tend to be cut back or deleted, and the attempt can draw attention you don't want.

The route that works is the slow one: earn independent coverage. Press, interviews, industry awards and original research that journalists cite all build the record that notability is judged on. Those same articles are often the pages AI platforms read when they answer questions about your category, so the work pays off twice.

Without a Wikipedia article

Plenty of brands are named in AI answers without one. Being a clear entity helps: the same name and description everywhere, Organization markup on your site, and listings on the directories and review sites the platforms read for your category.
