Query deserves freshness (QDF)

Query deserves freshness is the idea that some searches need recent results, so Google favours newer pages when a topic is in the news.

Query deserves freshness, or QDF, is the idea that some searches need recent results more than others. When a topic is suddenly in the news, or the answer changes often, search engines give newer pages a boost. When nothing has changed in years, an older page can rank just as well.

Google uses the name itself. Its guide to ranking systems describes several "query deserves freshness" systems, which show fresher pages for searches where people would expect them.

Which searches get fresh results

Three kinds of search tend to favour fresh pages:

  • Breaking news and trending topics, like a product recall or a storm
  • Things that come round regularly, like elections, sporting events or this year's best-of lists
  • Subjects that change often, like prices, software versions or rules

A search like "how to make cold brew" doesn't need freshness. The method hasn't changed. "Coffee prices 2026" does.

For example, say news breaks that a popular coffee machine is being recalled. For a few days, searches for its name show news stories and fresh posts above the year-old reviews that usually rank. Kestrel Roasters' blog post about the recall, published that morning, ranks well for a week. Then the news fades, and the reviews return.

What it means for your pages

Freshness isn't about changing a date. Updating the year in a title without changing anything else doesn't make a page fresh. What helps is real updates on pages where freshness matters: new prices, new products, new findings. Show a visible date so readers, and machines, can tell how current the page is.

AI platforms that search the web read what their searches turn up, so for the same kinds of questions, recent pages tend to be among their sources. A list article that hasn't been updated may drop out of the answers, and with it the brands it named.

In AnswerOrbit, A visible date is one of the eight page checks. The Movers tab in Sources shows sources that are new this week, or used more or less often than the week before.
