Website structure

Website structure is how a site's pages are organized and linked to each other, from the homepage down to each article and product.

Website structure is how your site's pages are organized and linked together. It's the menu, the categories, the way pages link to each other, and how many clicks it takes to get from the homepage to any page. A good structure lets people and bots find what they need without hunting.

For a marketer, structure decides which pages get attention. The pages you link to most, and from the most important places, are the ones search engines see as most important.

A good structure

Most good sites are shaped like a shallow tree. The homepage links to a few main sections. Each section links to its pages. Related pages link across to each other where it helps the reader. Every important page is a few clicks from the homepage, and no page is left with no links pointing to it.

For example, Kestrel Roasters' blog had grown to 300 posts, each reachable only through a date archive. Grouping them into brewing, beans and equipment, with a hub page for each, brought every post within three clicks of the homepage and made it obvious which guide was the main one on each subject.

Signs it's gone wrong

Pages that are many clicks deep. Pages with no internal links at all. Several pages competing for the same subject. Shop filters creating thousands of near-identical addresses. Menus with labels nobody would search for.

Bots find pages by following links, and AI bots are no different. A page buried deep, or linked from nowhere, may not be read at all. A clear hub page on a subject, linking to focused pages for each part, gives an AI platform one place that covers the whole question and other pages that answer each piece in detail.

In AnswerOrbit

The Pages tab in Website lists your site's pages with their bot visits and how often answers used and cited them. Pages the platforms never use are a hint that they're hard to find or hard to read. See Website and AI traffic.
