White-hat SEO
White-hat SEO is improving search rankings by methods search engines allow: useful content, a sound site and links people choose to give.
White-hat SEO is improving your search rankings with methods the search engines allow and encourage. It means making pages that help people, a site that bots can read, and a reputation that earns links and mentions on its own. The name comes from old westerns, where the good guys wore white hats and the villains black.
For a marketer, white-hat SEO is slower to pay off and much safer to keep. Tricks that work today can be undone by the next update. Pages people find useful keep working.
What it looks like in practice
Research what your customers actually ask, and answer it better than anyone else. Make your site fast, clear and easy to crawl. Earn links and mentions with things worth talking about: original research, a useful tool, good products, real stories for the press. Google's SEO starter guide and spam policies mark out where the line is.
The opposite, black hat, breaks the rules on purpose: bought links, hidden text, spam pages. Grey hat sits in between, and usually drifts darker over time.
For example, Fernhill Coffee wants to rank for office coffee. The white-hat route is a genuinely useful guide to choosing office coffee, a page on its office subscription with clear prices, and a pitch to a business magazine with its own survey of what offices drink. No shortcuts, but nothing to undo either.
White hat for AI search
The same approach works for AI platforms, and the shortcuts are riskier. An AI answer that names you because of a planted review or a fake comparison page can turn against you when it's found. Being genuinely recommended in the reviews, lists and forums the platforms read is what lasts.
