Answer Economy

The answer economy is the idea that people now get their answers straight from AI, so brands compete to be named in the answer itself.

The answer economy is a name for how search is changing. People used to type a search, get a list of links, and click through to find what they wanted. More and more, they ask an AI platform and get the answer straight away, often without clicking anything.

In that world, the prize is being named in the answer, and being described correctly when you are.

What changes for marketers

When search was about links, you worked toward a high ranking and a good title, and the person decided where to go. In the answer economy, the platform reads pages for the person and decides which brands to put forward. Your customer may never see your website, or the review that put you on the list.

That moves some of the work:

  • From your own pages alone to what other sites say about you, because the platforms read those too
  • From ranking for keywords to being named for questions
  • From counting clicks to counting mentions and citations, since many people never click

For example, someone asks Perplexity which coffee roasters deliver to the Highlands. The answer names Kestrel Roasters and Harrow & Pine. The person picks Kestrel, searches its name later on their phone, and buys. Kestrel's analytics shows a branded search. It doesn't show the answer that started it.

Clicks still matter

Answers often include links, and some people do click. Those visits are worth tracking. They just tell you less of the story than they used to, so read them alongside how often you're named.

That's what we measure: how often the platforms name you, where you come in the answer, and which pages they read. The Named against cited chart on the Overview splits your answers by whether they name you and whether they use your website. And the AI traffic tab in Website shows the visits that do come through.
