Answer layer

The answer layer is the AI-written reply between your pages and the people asking, which decides the brands they hear about.

The answer layer is the AI-written reply that stands in the middle, between the person asking and the pages you publish. They ask a question. The platform reads your pages, your competitors' pages, reviews and lists, and writes one reply. The person reads the reply, and maybe never your pages.

It's a useful way to picture where you stand. Your content still matters, because it's part of what the platform reads. But the answer decides which brands get named and how they're described.

What the answer layer does with your content

Think of the platform as an editor writing a short buying guide. It has read a stack of sources. It picks a few brands to mention, sums each one up in a line, and links to some of what it read.

That editor can do several things with your page:

  • Name you and link to your page
  • Name you and link to someone else's page about you
  • Use your page, then name a competitor
  • Leave you out entirely

For example, Fernhill Coffee publishes a detailed guide to choosing a coffee subscription. Perplexity reads it and cites it when someone asks how to choose one. But the answer names Kestrel Roasters and Harrow & Pine as the best options. Fernhill's work shaped the answer, and its competitors got the mention.

Why it matters

The answer layer means you can't judge your content by its traffic alone. A page can be read and used by the platforms every day and still send few visitors, because the answer gave people what they needed. And a page can win the citation while your brand loses the recommendation.

Cited, not named measures the case in the example: the share of answers that used your website but didn't name you. The Named against cited chart on the Overview splits your answers four ways, by whether they name you and whether they use your site. Sources shows every page the answers read.
