Authentic brand mention

An authentic brand mention is a genuine, accurate mention of your brand on a site AI platforms read, earned honestly by the brand.

An authentic brand mention is a real mention of your brand on someone else's site: a review, a list, an article or a forum reply that names you because the writer chose to, and gets the facts right. Nobody paid for it, and nobody pretended to be someone they're not to post it.

It's one of the main ways to get named more often in AI answers. The platforms read reviews, directories and articles to decide which brands to recommend. If those pages mention you accurately, the answers are more likely to as well.

Why authentic matters

Fake reviews, paid links and posts from accounts that hide who's behind them can look like a shortcut. They're risky. Review sites and platforms work to remove them, and when they're found they can damage the trust in everything else said about you. Google's guidance for AI features also tells site owners to skip chasing inauthentic mentions.

A real mention lasts. It stays on the page, gets read by people as well as platforms, and keeps working.

Where to start

The quickest wins are usually pages the platforms already read:

  • A "best of" list that names your competitors and not you. Contact the editor with what's new
  • A review site where you have few reviews. Ask real customers to leave one
  • A forum thread asking for recommendations in your area. Answer it openly, as yourself
  • An article that gets a fact about you wrong. Ask the writer to correct it

For example, Perplexity keeps citing a local food blog's list of the best coffee roasters in Bristol, which names Kestrel and Harrow & Pine. Fernhill Coffee opened a café in Bristol last month. A short, friendly email to the blogger with the news and an invitation to visit is how an authentic mention starts.

The Gaps tab in Sources lists the pages that name your competitors and not you, each with a suggested way in. Recommendations suggests steps like getting onto a page, answering a forum thread or growing your reviews. We never recommend reviews you arrange or reward, posts that hide who you are, or links you pay or trade for.
