Source gap

A source gap is a page AI platforms read for answers that name your competitors and not you.

A source gap is a web page the AI platforms use when they answer your questions, where the answers name one of your competitors but not you. Some tools call it a citation gap.

The same pages tend to come up again and again: a comparison article, a directory, a review site, a forum thread. If one of them leaves you out, every answer built on it can leave you out too.

Why gaps matter

Most of the pages AI platforms read aren't yours. Improving your own website helps, but an answer built on a review roundup that doesn't include you is hard to change from your site alone.

Each gap is a real page with an address, so the next step is concrete. Ask to be added to the comparison, fix your out-of-date directory listing, or answer the forum thread.

How we find them

We find gaps from the answers. If an answer used a page and named a competitor you track but not you, that page is a gap.

Each gap gets a score out of 100. Half of it comes from how often answers use the source, and half from how many of your competitors it names. Each one also suggests a way in, such as reaching out to the site or getting listed in a directory.

For example, a review site used in 118 of your answers that names two of your competitors will score higher than a blog post used in 9 answers that names one.

Where to find them

The Gaps tab in Sources lists them all. Our recommendations point you at the gaps that matter most, and show what happened after you acted. What the numbers mean has the definition.
