Citation domains

Citation domains are the websites AI answers cite, counted by website instead of by single page.

Citation domains are the websites that AI answers link to, counted by the whole site instead of page by page. If an answer links to three different articles on the same magazine's website, that's three pages and one domain.

Looking at domains gives you a short list of the sites that matter most for your questions. That's the list you'd hand a PR team or partnerships manager: these are the places the platforms trust for our subject.

What to look for

For each domain, two numbers help most: how many answers used it, and how many times it was linked. Then ask:

  • Which of these sites name us, and which don't?
  • Which are ours, which are competitors', and which belong to someone else?
  • Which have grown or shrunk lately?

For example, Fernhill Coffee lists the top ten domains for its prompts. Three are big review sites, two are food magazines, one is a forum, two are competitors' websites, and one is Fernhill's own. A newspaper's food section is in the list and has never mentioned Fernhill. That's a clear first target.

Domains and pages

Domains show where to focus. Pages show what to do there. Once you know a magazine's site matters, the pages tell you which of its articles the platforms actually use, so you know whether to pitch for a new piece or ask for an existing one to be updated.

In AnswerOrbit

The Domains tab in Sources lists every website the answers used, with how many answers used it and how many times it was linked. You can add a competitor's domains to their profile, so Sources knows which pages are theirs, and group domains to follow them together.
