Citation share

Citation share is the part of all the links in AI answers that point to one website or page.

Citation share is the slice of all the links in AI answers that go to a particular website. If the answers to your prompts contain 1,000 links and 100 of them point to your site, your citation share is 10%.

It tells you how much of the evidence the platforms show people is yours. A high citation share means that when an answer backs itself up with links, it often reaches for your pages.

How we count it

Each link to a page in the text of an answer is one citation. We add up every citation in the answers, to any website, and work out your website's share of that total.

For example, say this week's answers contain 400 citations. 36 of them link to pages on your site, 60 to a review site and 52 to your main competitor. Your citation share is 36 out of 400, or 9%.

Citation share vs citations

They answer different questions. Citations is the share of answers that used your website at all. Citation share is your share of all the links. One answer that links to five of your pages counts once in citations, and five times in citation share.

You'll see citation share under the Citations number, with citations per answer next to it. What the numbers mean explains all three.

Domains and pages

You can read a citation share for a whole website or for a single page, and the two can look very different. A site might take 10% of all citations while no single page on it takes more than 1%. The Domains and Pages tabs in Sources show both.
