Depth topic

A depth topic is a small, focused group of prompts about one opportunity, set up so its numbers tell you whether you're winning that one thing.

A depth topic is a small group of prompts about one narrow opportunity, like "office coffee for teams under 50" or "coffee gifts for Christmas." It sits alongside broad topics that cover your whole category.

The idea is simple. A broad topic tells you how you're doing overall. A depth topic tells you whether you're the brand the platforms recommend for the one thing you most want to win.

Why keep it separate

Numbers for a topic are added up across all its prompts. If your gift prompts sit in the same topic as everything else, a strong week on gifts disappears into the average, and so does a bad one.

Put the gift prompts in a topic of their own and the topic's visibility moves only when gift answers move. That's the signal you need when you're working on gifts.

How many to have

Keep it to a few, one for each priority you're actually working on. Each depth topic needs enough prompts to give a steady number, so five to ten prompts is a sensible size. More than a handful of depth topics usually means your priorities aren't really priorities.

For example, a roaster pushing into offices this quarter might set up one depth topic with eight office questions, and keep its broad "coffee subscriptions" topic as it is. If office visibility rises from 15% to 30% while the broad topic stays flat, the work is paying off where it was aimed.
