Perplexity instant checkout
Perplexity instant checkout lets a shopper buy some products inside a Perplexity answer, without going to the shop's own site.
Perplexity instant checkout is the option to buy a product inside a Perplexity answer. Someone asks what to buy, Perplexity shows products, and for some products from some merchants, they can pay there and then with details they've saved, without leaving the answer.
It matters because it moves the last step of shopping into the AI platform. The answer becomes the shop window and the till. A shopper who would once have clicked through to compare a few sites may now buy whatever the answer puts in front of them.
How it works
Perplexity introduced in-answer buying for shoppers in the US, for selected products from selected merchants. The shopper saves their shipping and payment details once, then buys in a click. When a product can't be bought that way, Perplexity sends them to the merchant's own site to finish. Perplexity has since added payment partners and changed who can use it, so check its current help pages for where it's available.
For example, someone asks Perplexity for a good burr grinder under $150. The answer shows three grinders, and one of them, sold by Kestrel Roasters, has a buy option right there. The other two link out to their shops. If the shopper is in a hurry, Kestrel has an edge that has nothing to do with the grinder.
What it means for brands
Being named is no longer the whole job when the answer can close the sale. Three things matter more:
- Your product data, like price, stock and descriptions, should be accurate everywhere the platform might read it
- Your product pages should state clearly what the product is and who it's for
- If you sell through other shops, the one a platform links to may be the one that gets the sale
