Product schema

Product schema is structured data on a product page that states the product's name, price, availability and reviews in a form machines can read.

Product schema is structured data you add to a product page to describe the product in a form machines can read: its name, brand, price, currency, whether it's in stock, and its ratings. It uses the Product type from Schema.org, usually written as JSON-LD in the page's code.

A person can read your price from the page. A machine has to guess which number on the page is the price, which is the sale price and which is the shipping cost. Product schema removes the guessing, so the facts that search engines and AI platforms pick up are the ones you meant.

What goes in it

The basics are the product's name, a description, an image, the brand, and an offer with a price, a currency and availability. You can add ratings and reviews, sizes and colours, a product ID like a GTIN, and shipping and returns details.

Google explains how it uses this markup, and which properties it needs, in its introduction to Product structured data. It splits product pages into two kinds: pages where people can buy the product from you, and pages that review or describe a product sold elsewhere.

An example

Say Kestrel Roasters sells a 1kg bag of its house espresso for £24. The page shows £24, a crossed-out £30, and a line about free delivery over £25. Without markup, a platform could quote any of those as the price.

With Product schema, the page states the price as 24.00, the currency as GBP, and the availability as in stock. The more specific you are, with the weight, the roast and the origin filled in, the more a platform has to describe your product correctly.

Keep the markup in step with the page. If the schema says one price and the page says another, a platform has no way to tell which is right.

The Page checks in Recommendations include a structured data check, which tells you whether a page has it. In Shopping, each product shows the prices ChatGPT quoted for it, and marks Price differs when a quoted price isn't the one in your catalogue.
