TollBit

TollBit is a company that helps websites see, control and charge for visits from AI bots, and publishes data on how AI bots use the web.

TollBit is a company that helps website owners deal with AI bots. On its own site it describes tools to tell AI traffic apart from human traffic, set rules for what bots may read, and charge AI companies for access, along with licences for AI systems that want to use a site's content in answers.

It's mostly used by publishers. But it matters to any marketer whose brand depends on being written about, because the sites the AI platforms read are deciding whether to let bots in for free.

What it does

TollBit sits between a website and the AI bots that visit it. The site owner can see which bots come and how often, block some, and set a price for others. AI companies that want the content can agree to pay, and the bots that agree get through.

It also publishes regular reports on what it sees across the sites that use it, such as how much AI bot traffic there is and how often bots ignore robots.txt. Those reports are a useful source if you want to understand how AI companies read the web.

Why it matters for brands

If the magazines and review sites in your industry start charging AI bots, the platforms may read some of them less. The sources behind the answers about your category can change, and the ones that charge may matter less for your visibility while the ones that stay open matter more.

For example, say a coffee magazine that cites Fernhill Coffee often starts charging for AI access, and one platform doesn't pay. That platform stops reading the magazine, and Fernhill loses one of the pages that kept it in that platform's answers.

If you run a content site yourself, it's one of the options for deciding what AI bots may read and on what terms.

The Movers tab in Sources shows sources that are used more or less often than the week before, which is where a site dropping out would show. For your own site, Bot visits in Website and AI traffic shows which AI bots read your pages, once you connect your server logs.
