AEO content scorecard

An AEO content scorecard grades one page against the things that help AI platforms read and quote it, and lists what to fix.

An AEO content scorecard grades a single page on how easily AI platforms can find, read and quote it. It runs the page through a list of checks and tells you which ones pass, which fail, and what to change.

Several AI search tools have one, under different names. The idea is the same: before you rewrite a page and hope, check it against what the platforms need.

What a scorecard checks

The checks vary by tool, but most look at a few kinds of thing:

  • Whether AI bots may read the page at all
  • Whether the text is in the page's HTML, or only appears after a script runs
  • Whether the page has a clear title and headings
  • Whether the first lines answer the question the page is about
  • Whether it has structured data and a visible date
  • How quickly it loads on a phone

How to use one

A scorecard tells you whether a page can be used. It can't tell you whether it will be. A page that passes everything can still be passed over, because the platforms also weigh what other sites say and which pages rank for the searches they run.

So compare. For example, say your page on office coffee machines passes five of eight checks, and the three pages the platforms cite for that question pass all eight. The gap between yours and theirs is your to-do list. If yours passes everything and theirs don't, the problem is somewhere else, probably off your site.

In AnswerOrbit

We call it page checks. Choose a page and a prompt, click Check the page, and we run eight checks, from whether AI crawlers may read it to whether its opening answers the prompt. Each one says whether the page passes and how to fix it. We run the same checks on up to five pages the platforms cite for that prompt, so you can see how yours compares.
