Answer bubbles

Answer bubbles form when AI platforms give everyone much the same answer, so the same few brands keep getting named and others struggle to break in.

An answer bubble is what happens when lots of people ask an AI platform the same kind of question and get much the same answer. The same few brands keep coming up, so they get more attention, more reviews and more links, which makes them even more likely to come up next time.

The name echoes the filter bubble, where a feed shows you more of what you already see. Here, it's everyone seeing the same short list.

Why it happens

A results page shows ten links, and people click around. An AI answer usually names a handful of brands, picked from the pages the platform trusts most. Those pages tend to be big review sites and well-known lists, which tend to name the brands that are already big.

For example, say three coffee subscriptions lead every "best of" list in the UK. Ask ChatGPT for the best coffee subscription, and it names those three. People sign up with them, write about them, and the lists stay the same. A newer roaster like Fernhill Coffee, however good, isn't on the lists, so it isn't in the answers.

How to get in

It's harder for a newcomer, but not closed. A few things help:

  • Find the pages the platforms read for your questions, and get onto them
  • Go after narrower questions where the leaders are weaker, like a region, a diet or a price point
  • Make your own pages answer those narrower questions directly
  • Earn reviews and mentions on the sites the platforms already trust

Seeing it in AnswerOrbit

The Ranking on the Overview lists every brand the answers name, ranked by visibility, including brands you don't track. If the same few names sit at the top week after week, you're looking at a bubble. The Gaps tab in Sources shows the pages that name your competitors and not you, which are the places to start.
