Brand position

Brand position is your rank among the brands named in one AI answer. Named first means position 1.

Brand position is where your brand ranks among the brands an AI answer names. If an answer recommends five coffee roasters and you're the second one named, your brand position in that answer is 2. Lower is better.

Many tools report it under the shorter name position, which has the details on how it's counted.

Why it's worth tracking

Being named counts for more when you're named early. Someone asking for "the best coffee subscription" may read the first two or three names closely and skim the rest. So two brands that are both named in an answer haven't done equally well if one is first and the other is seventh.

A count of mentions treats those two the same. Position shows the difference.

Reading it over many answers

One answer's position doesn't tell you much, because answers change from day to day. Most tools average it across the answers that name you.

For example, say Kestrel Roasters is named in 30 answers this week. It's first in 12, second in 12 and fifth in 6. That's 12 + 24 + 30 = 66, divided by 30 answers, so its average position is 2.2. Last week it was 2.8, so Kestrel is moving up the lists.

Check how many answers that average comes from. A position of 1 across 2 answers is far weaker than a position of 2 across 60.
