Entity salience

Entity salience is how central a brand or other entity is to a piece of text or a topic, as a search engine or AI model sees it.

Entity salience is how central an entity is to a piece of text or to a topic. A page can mention ten brands, but it's usually about one or two of them. Those are the salient ones.

For your brand, it's the difference between being known to exist and being what comes to mind. A platform can know Fernhill Coffee perfectly well and still not think of it when someone asks for the best coffee subscription.

Salience in a page

Some language tools give each entity in a text a salience score, a number for how central it is. Being in the title, being the subject of sentences and coming up throughout the text all raise it. A passing mention in the last paragraph barely counts.

For example, a review of the "five best espresso grinders" that names Harrow & Pine once, in a list at the end, gives Harrow & Pine low salience. A review that tests Harrow & Pine's grinder over three paragraphs gives it high salience, even though both pages mention it.

Salience in a topic

The same idea works across the web. If most of the pages about coffee subscriptions talk about Kestrel Roasters at length, Kestrel becomes central to the topic in the platforms' eyes. When someone asks about coffee subscriptions, Kestrel is the brand most likely to come to mind.

You raise your salience in a topic by being the main subject of pages about it: your own guides, reviews that focus on you, comparisons where you're one of two.

The Qualities tab in Perception gets close to this for the qualities in your industry. Association is how often the answers describing you bring up a quality. Standing is your rank among the brands the platforms name for it. You can be closely tied to a quality and still rank low when someone asks about it directly.
