Buyer-journey prompts

Buyer-journey prompts are a set of questions to AI platforms that follow a customer from first learning about a need to choosing what to buy.

Buyer-journey prompts are a set of prompts that follows your customers from their first question to their last one before they buy. Instead of tracking only the obvious question, like the best coffee subscription, you track what people ask while they're learning, while they're comparing, and while they're deciding.

The platforms can treat you differently at each stage. You might be named whenever someone compares brands and never when they're first learning. Tracking the whole journey shows you where you drop out.

The stages

Most journeys have three broad stages. Here's how they might look for a coffee subscription:

  • Learning: "How long do coffee beans stay fresh?" or "Is a coffee subscription worth it?"
  • Comparing: "Best coffee subscriptions in the UK" or "Fernhill Coffee vs Kestrel Roasters"
  • Deciding: "Is Fernhill Coffee's subscription easy to cancel?" or "Fernhill Coffee discount code"

Learning prompts usually name no brand. Comparing prompts may name a few. Deciding prompts often name you, because the customer already has your name.

Why cover them all

Each stage tells you something different. Learning prompts show whether the platforms put you in front of people who haven't decided what they want. Comparing prompts show how you stack up against the brands you meet head to head. Deciding prompts show whether the facts the platforms give about you are right, at the moment someone is about to buy.

For example, Fernhill Coffee tracks 12 prompts. It's named in most of its deciding prompts, a third of its comparing prompts, and none of its learning prompts. That points Fernhill to the guides and articles people read before they've heard of anyone.

Keep the stages in separate topics or tags, so a strong stage doesn't hide a weak one.
